SANTA CRUZ -- Before prosecutor Ariadne Symons and defense attorney Steve Wright met in court two months ago, Symons offered Wright a deal: Whoever wins the gang murder trial gets to fill the open judge seat. Symons won the case, but Wright declined her offer. "You know if I had her case, I would have made the same proposal," Wright said Wednesday. The battle for the seat on the Santa Cruz Superior Court bench moves from the courtroom to the ballot box this spring. The two attorneys are vying for the seat that will open up with Judge Samuel Stevens' retirement. The June primary ballot will include a race unseen in the county for more than two decades: an open race for judge. The 10 judges currently sitting on the Santa Cruz County Superior Court were all appointed by governors, including three in the past two years. The last time voters elected a judge who was not an incumbent was 1986.
